The Best Tips

Journal Entry: Wed Jul 1, 2015, 1:37 AM

I guess that the most popular question in interviews with freelance illustrators is "The best tips for aspiring artists". No wonder... that's probably the most valuable question.

Here is a list of my tips. Some of them I got before becoming a freelance illustrator. Other advices I "discovered" myself quite fast and  still others were understood after wasting a lot of time and getting stuck in a blind alley:

- Beginnings are usually hard, so be patient.

- Be a severe reviewer of your works. Being over-enthusiastic about your achievements can only prevent you from being better.

- Expand your "comfort zone", but have a specified specialization.

- Don't work for free just to expand your portfolio. Personal works are much better for this purpose.

- Keep the right work-life balance.

-  "Everything you do proves who you are".

And here's a blog entry, where I described these points more broadly especially in the context of a freelance artist grimdreamart.blogspot.com/2015…

What advices would you add? I'm really curious about them :sherlock:

  • Mood: Tense
  • Reading: LEM "The Star Diaries"
  • Watching: Game of Thrones
  • Playing: Piano

How flat watercolor works would look like, if someone added a little bit life to them? You can take a look at short animations based on my several works!

:boogie: Full-length version [link]- with a voice-over, telling a story about a brave voyager searching for an inspiration

:meditation: Shortened version [link]- a little bit more serious presentation of my works (a kind of an animated portfolio with quite atmospheric music)

I hope that you'll like them!

I graduated from Warsaw Faculty of Architecture but currently I work as freelance illustrator and concept artist.
Most of my artworks are created with traditional media, sometimes supported by digital technology. I find my inspiration in works of Old masters (L. da Vinci, G. B. Piranesi. A. Durer), fantasy books, heavy, melodic music and long walks in the woods. My favourite themes are related with music, steampunk, middle ages, and architecture in general.
